About The Event

Local governments are uniquely positioned to address the plastic waste crisis. It is local governments that are grappling with increasing volumes of plastic waste at waste management facilities across Canada. And it is municipal taxpayers that are burdened with the costs of environmental and infrastructure cleanup and collection services for plastic products in their communities. In recent years, Canadian municipalities have advanced interventions to move beyond their conventional role of reactive waste managers, towards curbing the overabundance of unnecessary plastic at the source of distribution. Rather than managing the increasing amount of plastic waste generated, local governments are increasingly looking to prevent waste from entering the system in the first place. But the upstream production and sale of plastics is often taking place beyond the borders of local governments. This session will explore local government approaches to upstream solutions to plastic waste and discuss some of the challenges and opportunities of doing so. Several initiatives will be highlighted, including regulatory tools, voluntary initiatives, and engagement with local business communities. The session will aim to engage and inform parties impacted by local government actions and create dialogue for further collaborative action between all levels of government, businesses, and civil society.
