About The Event
Plastic pollution has wide-ranging impacts on ecosystems, climate and human health. With negotiations for an international, legally-binding instrument to end plastic pollution at the half-way mark, various alternative visions for the plastic treaty are being proposed by negotiating countries. To address this critical juncture, this event will equip negotiators and other stakeholders with a deeper understanding of the potential environmental, economic, and social implications of the policies currently under discussion.
Join us to learn about the latest analytical studies and modelling simulations and hear from country representatives who are directly involved in the negotiations. In an interactive discussion, panelists will delve into key issues that negotiators and stakeholders will face during INC-4, such as:
- The implications of different ambition levels for the setting of global targets.
- The repercussions of upstream versus downstream measures to combat plastic pollution.
- The feasibility of specific policy measures and their expected impact on, e.g. virgin plastic production, greenhouse gas emissions or mismanaged plastic waste.
- The role of financing, highlighting opportunities for capital mobilization and cost considerations for policy implementation.Implications of a treaty based on common global rules versus voluntary national action.
- Data gaps in the global plastics space and the role of the treaty in addressing these.
Presenters:
- Shardul Agrawala, Head of the Environment and Economy Integration Division, OECD Environment Directorate
- Nivedita Biyani, Researcher, University of California Santa Barbara
